Historic Landscape Appraisal, Conservation and Management

To conserve a landscape we must understand what defines its character and cultural significance. RML do this by conducting Historic Landscape Appraisals, which consist of appropriate surveys, historical research, evaluation of the evidence and reporting of the findings.

We developed appraisal guidelines in conjunction with Cork County Council, published as Guidance notes for the Appraisal of Historic Gardens, Demesnes, Estates and their Settings. These are now in use in Ireland.

The Assessment of the Significance of the Impact of Development on Historic Landscape (ASIDOHL) is a specific assessment method used by RML when considering the impact of proposed developments on designated landscapes. ASIDOHL is one of the services we provide in support of planning applications within historic landscapes.

Conservation Management Plan

A conservation management plan is a working tool, normally written, that is prepared to explain why the heritage matters to people and sets out what can be done to look after it in the future.

A conservation management plan for a landscape is prepared by landscape specialist and should:

  • Describe the heritage asset in sufficient detail to allow decisions to be made;
  • Identify known and potential conflicts, threats and opportunities;
  • Set down agreed policies to guide future decisions and actions
  • Provide prescriptions for day-to-day maintenance and the management of change. Prepared after consulting different stakeholders.

RML has developed a number of Conservation Management Plans for historic sites in Britain and Ireland, to aid those responsible for management to conserve and sensitively develop heritage landscapes.
