Landscape Assessment and Visual Impact Assessment

We conduct landscape assessments to establish the existing rural or urban landscape context, and guide the development process. From this baseline we can assess the impact of change or development upon the landscape.

RML undertake:

  • Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments
  • LANDMAP assessment
  • Landscape Character Assessments
  • Historic Landscape Characterisation
  • Assessment of the Significance of the Impact of Development on Historic Landscape (ASIDOHL)

Our team will select and or devise the most appropriate method for the needs of a particular project. We have prepared many landscape assessments to assist in the preparation of planning applications and Environmental Statements, for developments in towns and other sensitive landscapes including AONBs and National Parks.

We work to the Guidelines for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) Vol.11 as appropriate, to complete the landscape and visual impact sections of Environmental Impact Assessments. This work then forms the basis of Expert Witness evidence given at Public Inquiries.

Through desk study and fieldwork, we will:

  • Describe, classify and analyse the landscape
  • Design, or advise on, the development and its integration in the landscape setting.
  • Establish the nature of the proposal and consider alternatives.
  • Identify the likely landscape and visual effects of the proposal
  • Determine the significance of the effects
  • Design mitigation measures and assess their likely effectiveness.
  • Provide mapping and presentation of survey data and results.
