Landscape Planning

Through landscape planning, our designers work with the design team to consider how one or many separate complex, phased or long-term land uses can be made to work coherently, fulfilling overall objectives and achieving a consistent quality.

Landscape planning policies form part of national, regional and local development plans. Our team interpret these policies to produce Framework Plans and development briefs. We also develop these plans and site briefs into working landscape masterplans for sites.

Landscape Masterplans

Landscape Masterplans provide a framework to guide the implementation of major development projects, where major or complex construction programmes are involved. Such masterplans are often a prerequisite of planning permission and financial support.

RML can:

  • Identify the potential and constraints of a proposed development site
  • Devise development strategies to maximise site potential
  • Illustrate land uses, development density, scale and mass
  • Identify important views and visual connections
  • Establish movement networks, public realm and potential development parcels
  • Evaluate the relationship between the proposed development and the existing urban or rural fabric
  • Integrate development with sensitive landscapes or wildlife
  • Produce complete masterplans, or contribute to multidisciplinary masterplanning teams
  • Advise on the alignment and design of highways within the landscape
  • Consult organisations and involve the public
