Ffos-y-Fran Final Restoration Strategy 2025
The Ffos-y-Fran final restoration strategy will signal the end of a long legacy of coal mining in the South Wales Valleys and the final phase of the wider East Merthyr Reclamation Strategy. The final restoration strategy for Ffos-y-Fran, presents a valuable opportunity to rehabilitate the landscape that has been lost and despoiled over centuries of industrial exploitation, to a new landscape that can develop and adapt for use by future generations. The final restoration of the land and the surrounding area of Ffos-y-Fran is the start of a long road of recovery for biodiversity and natural ecosystems, but also brings fresh opportunities for diversity, including community benefits and alternative development. RML led the team of specialist consultants in the application and provided Landscape, Ecology and planning services. |
A494 River Dee Bridge
The upgrade of the River Dee Bridge is identified in the Welsh Government’s ‘Moving North Wales Forward’ as a scheme for development to address the existing traffic bottleneck and overcome issues with the existing bridge. The crossing, which was built in 1960, forms a key strategic route between North East Wales and North West England and carries more than 61,000 vehicles per day. That figure is set to increase over the next 20 years and possible improvements are now being looked at to strengthen the crossing’s resilience. The Welsh Government, through the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent, has commissioned Mott MacDonald and their partners RML to examine the improvement options. |
A55 Junctions 15 and 16 improvement plans
There are nine options begin considered, five for Junction 15 and four for junction 16. The new junctions will result in safer travel for road users along the A55, and for people using the route to travel to and from Dwygyfylchi, Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr. It will also improve journey times and the road’s resilience. Active Travel is integral to the A55 junctions 15 and 16 improvement scheme and the options proposed seek to improve current active travel routes which will increase opportunities for walking or cycling. RML are working for Ramboll on this scheme providing Environmental Coordination, Ecology, Landscape and Archaeological services. |

Third Menai Crossing Study
RML, as part of a team led by AECOM, has secured a contract with the Welsh Government to deliver design services for the new third crossing of the Menai Strait. RML will carry out the key role of Environmental Coordinator and provide landscape appraisal services. Our long experience of infrastructure projects on the Island such as the design and construction of the A55 and our Welsh language capability will be important parts of our input into the project. |
A55/A494/A548 Study
RML provide the Environmental Coordinator, landscape and ecology input to the AECOM-led team for this ‘WelTAG2’ transport study of route options. We conducted LVIA site surveys, desk work and community consultation, leading to reports setting out the technical, environmental, financial and social benefits and effects of each corridor. |
